I've followed the <A HREF="http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/XULRunner_1.8.0.1_Release_Notes" REL="nofollow">XULRunner Installation guide</A> for 1.8.0.1, and I followed the installation instructions at the end of that, substituting your untar'd file path info.
